Fluorenes

Fluorenes are polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons consisting of two benzene rings fused in a linear arrangement with an sp3 hybridized carbon atom at the center. One of the most outstanding features of fluorenes is their photophysical properties. They exhibit strong fluorescence emission, making them useful in optoelectronic applications such as organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), organic photovoltaics (OPVs), and fluorescent sensors. The rigidity and planar structure of fluorenes give them high thermal and chemical stability, making them suitable for applications that require robust materials. Fluorenes and their derivatives also have interesting electronic properties, including charge transport and electron accepting/donating abilities. These properties have led to their use in organic semiconductors, field-effect transistors, and organic photoredox catalysis. In addition, fluorenes have applications in medicinal chemistry, where they serve as scaffolds for drug discovery and development.
