Milbemycin oxime belongs to a class of compounds known as macrocyclic lactones and was discovered through research efforts focused on identifying novel parasiticides. It was first synthesized in the 1980s by scientists at the pharmaceutical company Interceptor and later commercialized for use in the manufacture of veterinary drugs.

Milbemycin oxime is widely used in the veterinary field to prevent and treat parasitic infections in dogs and cats. It is effective against a range of internal and external parasites, including heartworms, intestinal worms, mites and fleas.
