Hydroxypinacolone retinoate (HPR) is a novel retinoid derivative. It was first synthesized in the late 1990s in an effort to develop retinoid compounds with improved efficacy and tolerability compared to traditional retinoids. The discovery of HPR stemmed from a desire to overcome the limitations of traditional retinoids, including skin irritation, photosensitivity, and long-term stability issues. Researchers sought to design a retinoid molecule that could exert the beneficial effects of retinoids without causing the adverse side effects typically associated with them. HPR is synthesized by chemically modifying the structure of retinoic acid to improve its stability and bioavailability while maintaining its biological activity. The addition of hydroxyl and pinacolone moieties to the retinoid backbone produces a compound with unique properties and improved performance. A key advantage of HPR is its enhanced skin penetration ability. Compared to traditional retinoids, HPR can penetrate the skin more effectively and reach deeper layers to exert its biological effects. Preliminary study results suggest that HPR may offer a safe and effective alternative to traditional retinoids for the treatment of these conditions.
