Rubber becomes elastic not just because its molecules are long, but because those long chains are connected by the right number of crosslinks.
1,4-Benzoquinone dioxime became important in alternative rubber-vulcanization systems, particularly for relatively low-unsaturation elastomers such as butyl rubber. Vulcanization converts mobile polymer chains into a controlled network: enough crosslinks prevent permanent flow, but too many make the material hard and brittle. Rubber performance emerges from the right degree of molecular connection.
