Dimethyl ether
CAS 115-10-6
Dimethyl ether shows how the same formula can lead to different storage and combustion behavior.
Dimethyl ether and ethanol share a formula but differ in connectivity. In DME, oxygen joins two methyl groups, changing intermolecular association and phase behavior. CAS 115-10-6 is ordinarily a gas, with pressurized liquid storage relevant to propellant and fuel applications. Compression-ignition research has investigated its favorable ignition behavior and low soot formation, while also examining injection requirements and other emissions. Low soot does not mean that every pollutant disappears or that any conventional fuel system can use it unchanged. Production routes provide another distinction: the same final molecule can come from different feedstocks. Its story connects a small structural rearrangement with a larger engineering question, showing why molecular properties and evidence for an actual system must be considered together when evaluating a proposed application.
