Dodecenylsuccinic anhydride pairs a reactive anhydride ring with a hydrophobic C12 chain. That architecture is central to alkenylsuccinic-anhydride paper sizing: the chemistry changes how cellulose surfaces interact with water. Intriguingly, the classic explanation of direct ASA-cellulose ester bonding is still being refined because ASA hydrolyzes rapidly. An industrial process can be mature even when its molecular mechanism remains scientifically interesting.
