M-Terphenyl
CAS 26140-60-3
Three benzene rings can help make invisible radiation visible: m-terphenyl is an aromatic fluor used in modern scintillator chemistry.
m-Terphenyl links simple aromatic structure to radiation detection. Its three-ring pi system can accept excitation energy and emit fluorescence, and recent lithium-loaded plastic scintillators have used m-terphenyl as a primary fluor. The meta connection and non-planar geometry shape how excitation moves through the molecule. Invisible radiation deposits energy; aromatic excited states process it; detectable photons come out.
