Which group would you expect fluoride to replace? Look at 5-bromo-3-nitropyridine-2-carbonitrile.
It has a bromine. A nitro group. A nitrile. And a nitrogen inside the aromatic ring. Now add fluoride. The obvious guess might be: Br out. F in. But published chemistry shows something much more interesting. The nitro group leaves. Fluorine takes its place. And the bromine stays. Why? Because this isn't an ordinary benzene ring.
