An Sn-Sn bond that can relay carbon-bond construction - with an important toxicity trade-off.
Hexamethylditin is a chemical relay built around an Sn-Sn bond. Metal-mediated reactions can cleave that bond and transfer trimethylstannyl groups to aryl or vinyl systems; the resulting organostannanes can then enter Stille cross-coupling to make C-C bonds. This made hexamethylditin useful in tandem synthetic sequences. Its other lesson is equally important: organotin toxicity, waste, and residual tin mean that reaction efficiency must be judged alongside safety and environmental cost.
