Why remove some aromaticity from a heat-transfer fluid? Because the best high-temperature molecule is useless if it will not stay pumpable.
Partially hydrogenated polyphenyls are built around a compromise. Aromatic rings provide thermal robustness, but highly aromatic multi-ring molecules can crystallize too easily. Selective hydrogenation disrupts packing and improves liquid behavior while retaining much of the high-temperature stability. CAS 68956-74-1 is a UVCB mixture, not one unique molecule - exactly the kind of material whose performance comes from a designed distribution of structures.
