Fipronil is a broad-spectrum insecticide belonging to the phenylpyrazole class, developed for the control of a wide range of pests, including insects that affect agricultural crops, household pests, and even fleas and ticks on pets. First synthesized in the late 1980s by the pharmaceutical company Rhône-Poulenc (now part of Bayer), fipronil is known for its high efficacy and relatively low toxicity to humans and animals when used according to recommended guidelines.
