Discovory and Applicatios

Antibiotic A 40926, also known as vancomycin, was discovered in the mid-20th century by a team of scientists led by Edmund Kornfeld at Eli Lilly and Company. The discovery was serendipitous, arising from a screening program aimed at isolating novel antibiotics from soil bacteria. Vancomycin was isolated from the soil bacterium Amycolatopsis orientalis and recognized for its potent activity against Gram-positive bacteria, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).

Vancomycin has become one of the most important antibiotics in clinical practice, primarily reserved for the treatment of serious infections caused by multidrug-resistant Gram-positive bacteria. It is commonly used to treat infections such as MRSA, Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea, and endocarditis. Additionally, vancomycin is sometimes administered prophylactically in surgical procedures to prevent post-operative infections.
